Do you always need an attorney?

Not every case needs a family law attorney (or any attorney, for that matter). Some small family law cases can be settled directly with the other side. Sometimes, it makes more sense to settle a small divorce case, for example, without the help of an attorney because attorney's fees and other costs might leave little or no assets for spouses to divide when the case is finished. 

On the other hand, if your case involves substantial assets or complicated issues of child custody it becomes more important to have a divorce, custody or modification lawyer working on your side, or to at least to consult with an attorney prior to talking to the opposing party or their attorney.
